British car insurance policyholders are paying out £1 million a day in repair bills for damage done by potholes, according to a report.

Research by Warranty Direct on behalf of potholes.co.uk, suggests that the number of holes in roads across the UK has risen by a third over the last year.

“The problem is the combined result of the recent wet and wintry weather conditions and longer hours of darkness,” said a spokesperson for the website.

It said that car insurance policyholders have to pay on average £240 to repair the damage done by potholes.

The website estimated that car insurance policyholders shell out a total of £2.8 billion of repair fees every year.

In related news, research by What Car? has found that 18 per cent of motorists do not confess to damaging a parked car, while 45 per cent said they would be in two minds as to whether to admit to an accident.
