Car insurance policyholders are being warned of the dangers of invisible potholes after a campaign website reported a rise in vehicles being damaged by ruts in the road.
According to Potholes.co.uk, which was set up by Warranty Direct, many car insurance policyholders are failing to notice water-filled ruts in the road.
Wet and wintry weather, combined with the longer hours of darkness, are also increasing the problem, the website said.
It added that experts suggest there has been a 65 per cent rise in defects on roads across England alone in the past decade.
“Treacherous ice and snow may be at the forefront of drivers’ minds as the main hazard, but potholes are another danger they need to be aware of,” said Duncan McClure Fisher, of Warranty Direct.
Motorists should also make sure their windscreens are clear before setting out, according to Continental Direct, which found that a third of motorists admit to driving without being able to see properly.
