Washington State Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler, currently stands as one of the major supporters of this pay-as-you-drive concept, the idea of having auto insurance policies available that aims to lessen carbon emissions by rewarding motorists who drive less. The question now is whether state commissioner Kreidler will mandate all insurance providers to carry such policy as legislators are still debating regarding the issue.

According to reports, pay-as-you-drive concept is similar to environmental movements such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED and the Energy Star appliance standards, a distinction being that pay-as-you-drive tends to combat environment degradation thru car insurance.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has welcomed the government’s consultation on 20mph speed limits, but stressed that better driving standards among car insurance policyholders are also important for road safety.

Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the IAM, said that most accidents are caused by car insurance policyholders making mistakes.

“It would be naive to assume a speed limit reduction alone will totally remove all deaths and injuries from our roads,” he commented.

He added that better driving standards and road awareness among car insurance policyholders, combined with improvements in road engineering, would make the “most sustainable differences”.

Nevertheless, the IAM said it supported the plans to give councils flexibility to introduce their own measures to address local problems.

Road safety minister Paul Clark announced the proposals yesterday (December 16th), which would allow local authorities to put a 20mph limit in place without the need for traffic calming measures such as speed humps.

    Steamers

You see driverless cars throughout your neighborhood, idling in the driveway, a trail of vapor rising from the tailpipe as the engine warms. Car thieves see them too. They call them steamers and they are easy cars to steal. In many municipalities, this is such a problem that you can get a ticket for leaving your car running while unattended.

    Are you covered?

Your auto insurance company may not pay your claim for a steamer theft. Often there is language in your auto insurance policy that states that you must take reasonable care to avoid loss of your vehicle. Leaving the keys in your car with the engine running, while you are inside your home, does not meet the reasonable care standard. Car insurance companies can deny your claim under these circumstances.
