More car insurance policyholders are using handheld mobile phones while driving than before the government introduced tougher penalties to crack down on the practice, according to new research.

The Transport Research Laboratory found that 2.8 per cent of car insurance policyholders used handheld mobiles at the wheel, compared to 2.6 per cent in 2006.

According to the study, this figure dropped to 1.4 per cent immediately after the introduction of the tougher penalties in 2007, which included a £60 fine and three points on licenses, but this rose to 1.9 per cent in 2008.

The research was commissioned by Transport London and involved more than 14,000 vehicles in total.

“It is incredibly worrying that people still don’t take seriously the dangers that talking on your phone while driving pose,” said Sarah Fatica, from road safety charity Brake.

Recent research by Kwik-Fit found that three per cent of students have broken the law by driving without car insurance.

How to Lower Your Allstate Car Insurance Premiums

Posted by admin On December - 7 - 2009

Step 1 Raise your DeductibleUsually, the higher your deductible, the lower your premium will be. The deductible is the amount that you pay out-of-pocket to fix your car if you have an accident. If you raise your deductible, you will have to pay more out-of-pocket in the event of an accident, but your monthly premiums will usually go down. So if you don’t think you’ll have many accidents, then raise your deductible.
Step 2 Consult with your Agent to Lower your PremiumsAn easy and affective way to lower your premiums is to meet with your Allstate Agent and re-figure or change your current insurance plan. Your agent has the ability to change or update your existing plan. If you are paying for extra services that you don’t really need, such as Roadside Assistance or rental car coverage, then you can drop or change these from your plan in order to lower your premium.
Step 3 Take a Safe Driver’s Education ClassMany auto insurance companies usually offer their customers a discount for taking a short driver’s education class. These are sometimes held in the local community or DMV and meet once or twice a week. Full Article…

Car insurance customers in Scotland are paying less than drivers in England when covering their vehicle, a new report has shown.

A new survey looking at the cost of auto insurance across regions of delete the UK has revealed that Scotland is home to some of the cheapest policies in the country.

Carried out by moneysupermarket.com, the research placed seven postal areas of Scotland in the top ten most inexpensive list – Dunfermline, Glenrothes, Aberdeen, Grangemouth, Elgin and two in Dundee.

However, the cheapest auto insurance in the UK can be found in Truro, Cornwall, with an average lowest quote for a year resting at of £355.72.

The Manchester towns of Ardwick, Longsight and Chorlton-on-Medlock were found to have the costliest policies at a typical low quote of £873.45, while Birmingham, Liverpool and Bradford also fared badly.

Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: “At a time when most motorists are looking to save pounds, car insurance is yet another added, but necessary, expense – so the more cost effective the car insurance the better.

“Of course it’s no surprise to see urban hotspots such as Manchester and Birmingham topping the chart for the most expensive postcodes, where motorists could see the cost of their cover double.”

A large proportion of motorists in the UK have admitted that they do not fully understand the terms and conditions of their auto insurance policies.

A recent survey from swiftcover.com found that 42 per cent of drivers taking out auto insurance are not certain about aspects of their policies, with 18 per cent claiming that providers deliberately set out to confuse them.

How Your Driving Record Affects Your Insurance Premium

Posted by admin On December - 4 - 2009

Do You Deserve Lower Auto Insurance Rates?

That depends on what kind of driver you are! While many states have adopted “no-fault” insurance reporting methods, chances are good that your car and truck premiums will rise if you’re issued a ticket for a violation, or if you report a motor vehicle accident to your insurance company.

Insurance companies look at your driving record over an established time period. The occurrence or number of reported accidents or tickets in a short time frame definitely impact how much you pay for vehicle insurance. On the plus side, a clean driving history can help you qualify for discounts on car insurance. Depending on your insurance company, if you’re a safe driver, you may even see lower deductible levels when they repair your car or replace items from theft.

Lower Premiums and Insurance Perks

Even if you had accidents in the past, your insurance company may provide accident forgiveness if you have a clean driving record for several years.
