This UK road safety advert shows a motorcyclist receiving warnings of oncoming hazards via road signs, the back of vehicle and hitch-hikers, warning that real-life dangers are not so easy for bikers to detect.

The Costs of Monster Trucks

Posted by Ryan Baker On September - 27 - 2011

The monster trucks that you see plastered across billboards and revving it up at rallies cost tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars for the people who own them. The average truck really lives up to its “monster” name – they usually weigh in between 10,000 and 12,000 pounds and are usually 11 feet tall by 12 feet wide. They are built specifically for short bursts of intense power, so their engines usually average about 1500 horsepower. Because these trucks are so huge and powerful, they are equipped with three shut off switches: one with the driver inside the truck; one on the rear of the truck, and one remote control kill switch which is held by an official in case the safety of the crowd is threatened. The driver is required to wear a five-point safety harness, helmet, gloves, a fire-proof suit and a HANS (head and neck support) device.

Americans in Support of Teen Licensing Legislation

Posted by Ryan Baker On August - 27 - 2011

A new survey has revealed that the majority of Americans believe that the government should standardize state programs that delay full licensure of teen motorists. According to the survey, conducted by Allstate Insurance, most adults believe teens are bad drivers and need additional time to practice before being given full driving rights.

GDL Programs Are Making a Difference

The study found that most adults fully agree with graduated driver licensing (GDL) programs. These programs are said to lessen the risk of auto accidents by requiring teens to gain experience in supervised and low-risk conditions before being issued their full licenses.

Existing programs around the country require teen drivers to pass through three licensing stages before being granted full driving privileges:

  • A supervised learners permit
  • An intermediate license only granted if the driving test is passed
  • A full license only if the first two phases are completed

Experts say the programs make a significant difference in accident rates since it gives teens additional time to practice in real yet safe conditions.
