Auto insurance claims ’40 per cent higher in December’

Posted by admin On December - 24 - 2009

AA Insurance urges car owners to take extra care as the freezing temperatures set in.

Auto insurance customers have been warned that 40 per cent more claims occur during December than in other months.

A study by leading firm AA Insurance found that the sizeable rise in the cases it witnesses can largely be explained by the hazardous conditions brought about by snow and black ice.

However, the company also noted that a number of drivers are now receiving a different type of shock, and one which cannot be easily resolved by insurers.

Noticing a scrape or a dent on a car is never an enjoyable experience, but AA Insurance explained that the perpetrators are becoming increasingly devious by failing to leave a note to detail the incident.

“There’s no worse Christmas gift than finding someone has left a dent or scrape on your car and not left a note to admit it,” said Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance.

“I would appeal to the conscience of drivers who do accidentally collide with a parked or abandoned vehicle to leave the best Christmas card possible – a note with your contact details so that insurers can sort out the claims.”

Mr Douglas also implored auto insurance customers not to leave their cars unattended with their engines running in the freezing weather.

“Insurers almost always reject these claims because theft of an unattended vehicle left open with the keys in it is specifically excluded from policies,” he added.

Car owners are advised to avoid being targeted by opportunistic thieves in this way by simply using de-icers and scrapers to remove the snow and ice from their windscreens and windows.

Last week, the Post Office claimed that Britons who have been neglecting their cars this year as a way of saving the pennies should not skimp on auto insurance during the winter months.

Britons’ car neglect ‘highlights need for auto insurance’

    Posted by admin On December - 17 - 2009

Car owners who have avoided spending money on their vehicles in recent months must have auto insurance to prepare for the worst this winter, the Post Office claims.

Auto insurance should be at the forefront of Britons’ minds as the winter weather draws in, according to a new report released today (December 17th).

The Post Office conducted a study which found that 48 per cent of car owners have neglected their vehicles to an extent this year in an attempt to tighten their purse strings.

Almost a third of respondents (30 per cent) admitted that they have not had a minor scratch, dent or other cosmetic fault repaired, with 13 per cent letting tyres wear down more than normal.

In addition, 12 per cent said they have turned a blind eye to squeaking and rattling noises, while eight per cent have not replaced poor windscreen wipers and seven per cent have ignored dashboard warning lights.

The report even suggested that six per cent of Britons have opted against forking out to fix an ‘advisory’ problem flagged up in an MOT test.

However, Richard Pennant-Jones, head of car insurance at the Post Office, explained that plummeting temperatures will make driving conditions awkward and could see owners ultimately falling victim to their thriftiness.

“With heavy snow forecast in parts of the UK, car owners who have tried to save a few pounds in recent months by ignoring warning lights or failing to get their car serviced are putting themselves and others at risk,” he said.

“Failing to maintain your car could even result in it being deemed un-roadworthy and therefore invalidate your insurance.”

Mr Pennant-Jones also advised motorists to ensure that they have breakdown cover as an additional element to their auto insurance in light of the upcoming winter months.

Last week, a study by moneysupermarket.com suggested that Scottish drivers receive the most affordable car insurance deals.

Scots get best auto insurance deals

Car insurance customers in Scotland are paying less than drivers in England when covering their vehicle, a new report has shown.

A new survey looking at the cost of auto insurance across regions of delete the UK has revealed that Scotland is home to some of the cheapest policies in the country.

Carried out by moneysupermarket.com, the research placed seven postal areas of Scotland in the top ten most inexpensive list – Dunfermline, Glenrothes, Aberdeen, Grangemouth, Elgin and two in Dundee.

However, the cheapest auto insurance in the UK can be found in Truro, Cornwall, with an average lowest quote for a year resting at of £355.72.

The Manchester towns of Ardwick, Longsight and Chorlton-on-Medlock were found to have the costliest policies at a typical low quote of £873.45, while Birmingham, Liverpool and Bradford also fared badly.

Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: “At a time when most motorists are looking to save pounds, car insurance is yet another added, but necessary, expense – so the more cost effective the car insurance the better.

“Of course it’s no surprise to see urban hotspots such as Manchester and Birmingham topping the chart for the most expensive postcodes, where motorists could see the cost of their cover double.”

A large proportion of motorists in the UK have admitted that they do not fully understand the terms and conditions of their auto insurance policies.

A recent survey from swiftcover.com found that 42 per cent of drivers taking out auto insurance are not certain about aspects of their policies, with 18 per cent claiming that providers deliberately set out to confuse them.
